Be sure that you are only digging at the bottom of the trenches, as you don’t want any water away from where you are installing your French drains.

Next, begin your excavation. Clear an area between your French drain trench and the basement floor. After the digging is done, you will want to put a layer of polyethylene sheeting to help contain the excavated soil. This is especially important when it comes to an interior system, where you may have a wet basement floor and will have to drain that water away from your house.

Once the soil is in place, begin putting your French drains in. As with any plumbing job, preparation is always the key. Finally, you will want to connect the water coming into the house to the main French drain and then to the inlet grate. If necessary, trench the pipe for extra efficiency. Then, put a stop to the water coming down the trench by putting a perforated pipe at the bottom of the French drain. This will allow water to escape, while maintaining a connection between the pipe at the bottom and the inlet grate at the top.
